Clark Class VI Scout

design by Glenn Gagnon

NOTES:
With the shocking revelation of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey scout that was capable of weapons firing while cloaked, many strategists at Starfleet Command were knocked for a
loop. Although the Khitomer Conference was miraculously a success resulting in the Khitomer Peace Accord, the Pandora’s box of enhanced cloak technology had been opened. With fears that more ships with this capability might be active within the Klingon sphere of influence, it was deemed to be of the highest importance that recently improved sensing technology be deployed quickly on front-line starships, especially those that patrolled near Klingon, Triangle, and Romulan space.

The Clark class scout incorporates the first generation of that improved technology, along with improvements to it’s warp and impulse drive systems. The primary sensors were a differential based asymmetric passive platform combined with enhanced gravimetrically-targeting active scanners. The warp drive nacelles of the Clark took advantage of miniaturization of some older, yet still reliable, drive systems. The Clark class was manufactured at the Sol V and Proxima Centauri shipyards, and is named for William Clark, a Terran explorer from
Earth’s 18th century.

The Clark-class scout USS Cere’s Star became well know as an effective bait vessel in an operation that attempted to draw out rebellious Klingon vessels from the lKS. The IKS had seen a staggering increase in men and material after millions of disaffected Klingons left the Klingon Empire rather than accept the Khitomer Accords. The Cere’s Star would cruise in or near the Triangle/IKS border while actively scanning for cloaked ships. Once the scout detected a cloaked vessel, she would hail the unknown ships and declare that they were in violation of the Khitomer Accords. IKS commanders, believing they outgunned the lone scout, would attack; the Ceres would trade several long-range volleys, then jump to warp remaining just outside of Klingon’s weapons range. The IKS commanders, often enraged at the “cowardice” of the Federation captain, would continue the pursuit, being drawn along on the chase until they approached the Gagnon nebule, a nondescript class 2 nebula near Starbase 10. Once within range, the Ceres signaled a small Federation strike-force consisting of a Constellation class cruiser and two Wilkerson class destroyers who would intercept the IKS ship. This successful operation destroyed or captured nearly a dozen IKS ships before the renegades realized the tactic.

Of the 38 Clark-class vessels commissioned, 27 were used by Galaxy Exploration Command, 5 were utilized by Starfleet Intelligence and 3 were assigned to Starfleet Training Command. 2 have been destroyed, and 1 has been declared lost. All operational Clark scouts are in reserve fleets, but are expected to be sold or scrapped with the next 5 to 10 years.

Special Rules for Clark-Class Scouts
-1 to hit moving cloaked ships (-2 for any other craft allied with this vessel).
-3 to hit stationary cloaked ships (-4 for any other craft allied with this vessel).
Ship captain must declare a shield facing to can, but scans are always ruled successful of a cloaked ship in in that arc.

Design Notes:
This fun 20 year old design and cool backstory are from Brad’s old site. The equipment list from the original design by Glenn is slightly different, and we went ahead and increased the overall design using our equipment to allow the design to fit a little better with the intended story.
