Captain Yueh read the reports with sadness. He knew the Klingon would continue for years if needed. He remembered his grandmother’s horror stories of the war and the unnecessary death and destruction. Only a decisive opening battle would slow their them. A “Vulcan hello” someone had once told him was the only way to deal with Klingons.

The lounge door opened and the the chief engineer came in, grabbing a cup of coffee. She looked at the captain and knew he was deep in thought. “How bad is it?” she asked.

He looked up as she sat down at the table with him. “Over 100 squadrons so far. We should have struck before they…” The captain didn’t finish his thought.

“You know that’s not how the Federation works.”

“Well maybe is should be!” the Yueh said with more anger in his voice than he intended. He quickly too and placed his dinner plate in the recycling receptacle and patted the engineer on her shoulder as he sat back down.

She glanced at her coffee, letting then captain have his moment of frustration. “Who?” she finally asked.

“And older cousin. Zack. He was on a freighter.” The captain’s thoughts turned inward. “27 runs. Three more and he could have retired with a danger pension. A damn farming colony! Who attacks a farming convoy!” the captain’s frustration surfaced again. He sighed heavily. “What about you?” he asked.

“My dad lost his leg. It was so bad they couldn’t get him a working prosthetic. Had to retire,” she said.

“Didn’t know that about him,” Yueh said.

“Eh, by the time the leg healed enough they could actually get a neural connection he was well in his 70’s…wanted to go be a painter on Risa,” she said with a smile.

The Klaxon sounded. “Red Alert – Captain to the Bridge! Red Alert – all hands to battle stations!”

The two officers look at each other knowingly, finishing their coffee and getting up and heading out of the lounge. “I hear Risa’s nice this time of year,” the Captain said.
