The physical similarities between the Lacendt’Aen, or “Small Wing” and the older V-1 Starglider are so striking that Star Fleet Intelligence believes that the hull design may have been licensed by the Romulan Empire for non-government use.
Unlike the V-1, the CS-5 was configured for use as a scout and/or light-duty courier. With a crew of only 33 and virtually no weapons to speak of, having only one bank of relatively low powered RB-2A disruptors, it was entirely unsuited for combat. Designers, however, made certain that the ship was maneuverable, and the RWC-2/RID-3 engine package generated plenty of power for an efficient RSM shield generator.
The Type 2 is believed to have been equipped with a cloaking device, allowing it to operate closer to contested space. A small but powerful torpedo was also believed to have been installed. The Type 2 also appeared to be far less roomy as the Type 1, indicating that a small squad of troops or other specialized personnel may have been assigned to these ships.
Intelligence reports indicate that over 50 of these vessels have been built. 3 Type 1s and 1 Type 2 have been destroyed. 1 Type 2 has been scrapped. 1 Type 1 was captured. 26 Type 1s and 4 Type 2s have been placed in reserve fleets. 10 of each type have been sold. Most of those sold are believed to still be in operation despite their age. Most have been re-armed and upgraded and operate throughout known space. The class was also the base for the similar CS-15.
