D-76 (Bringer of Glory) Class XII Cruiser

design by Morgan Donovan

NOTES:
Known Sphere Of Operation: Empire-wide use
Data Reliability: E for all models
Major Data Source: Klingon Sector Intelligence

The development of the D-76 K’t’batlhmey, or “Bringer of Glory” class battlecruiser was taken by Star Fleet Intelligence as positive evidence of Klingon preparation for renewed open conflict with the Federation. Despite some similarities with the D-7 series battlecruiser, the D-76 represented a significant advance over the older cruiser.

Despite being nearly a third-again the mass of the D-7, the D-76 was capable of operating with a similar-sized crew, demonstrating improved Klingon ship-handling abilities. Studies of long range scans suggested larger, more efficiently-arranged command and control spaces were primarily responsible.

The D-76’s KWG and KIG powerplant generated nearly twice the power of the infamous D-7. The vessel was equipped with six potent KD-17 disruptors as well as the powerful and efficient KSQ shield generator. The KCE cloaking device, which had entered Klingon service only a year previously, provided stealth capability previously unavailable to Klingon ships of its size. The D-76 was not without its disadvantages, however. Analysis suggested that it was not as nimble as other Klingon designs. Additionally, the class only carried a light battalion of 110 troops. Star Fleet Intelligence theorized that the primary role of the D-76 was to escort and supplement the massive L-24 battleships, which carried a heavy battalion of marine troops, or squadrons of T-5 and T-12 class assault ships.

Originally launched in early 2290, the D-76 program was immediately cancelled after the destruction of Praxis. The fifteen D-76s in service would begin a refit in 2316 to the B model, improving their disruptors and shields. All 15 were converted to the B models by 2325. Attempts to upgrade several systems in 2336 proved ineffective, and a C model was never fielded.

Despite the vessels age, a new model was launched in 2366. The D model proved surprisingly efficient, but was expensive to field. By the time of the Dominion war, only 6 had been upgraded, however, with the remaining vessels scheduled to be sold. The advent of the war changed those plans and the remaining vessels were upgraded to the D model. Two were destroyed during the war and 1 was scrapped due to battle damage. The remining 12 vessels are on active patrol, although most are expected to be retired and sold soon.

The D-76 was produced at the Gnuu Re’ shipyards.
