The immediate predecessor to the infamous Wanderer class, the Zhofvt was considered a capable design when it was introduced in late 2270. Generous cargo capacity, a reasonable weapons package, plenty of power and excellent speed all contributed to making the Zhofvt an excellent Class V vessel. Initial production was set at three per year, with production intended to ramp up once further orders were placed.

The introduction of the Wanderer, however, derailed the hoped-for windfall of orders. The Wanderer had similar overall speed, less power and lower cargo capacity, but was more maneuverable, energy efficient and luxurious when compared to the initial design of the Zhofvt. The Wanderer also boasted greater firepower and better weapons coverage than the Zhofvt.

In 2282, designers attempted to counter the popularity of the Wanderer by introducing the A-2 model Zhofvt. This design did not address the overall capabilities of the Zhofvt when compared to the Wanderer. Although more luxurious than the A-1 model, the A-2 saw little change in the overall capability of the design. Less than a dozen orders were placed.

By 2297, backers of the Zhofvt knew that a significant improvement was necessary and contracted for the B-1 mode. With higher firepower and better defenses than its predecessors, the B-1 was a far more capable raider, but was also far more expensive the purchase and operate. In the end, only 7 were built.
