The CS-9 Swift Word class courier filled a need for a high speed, high security, light cargo and personnel transport in situations that required more than a warp-shuttle, but did not justify diverting a large vessel from other more pressing duties. First introduced in 2275, the Type 1 could carry up to 50 passengers and 5,000 mt of cargo at an impressive Warp 6 for extended periods of time.
As a courier/transport, the CS-9 was never intended for combat, with a weak hull, two RB-5 distruptors and a single RP-1 torpedo. It was modestly protected by the RSM shield system and equipped with the RCB cloaking device. Commanders typically preferred to either retreat at high speed of cloak and sneak away when confronted by superior adversaries. Only when there was no other option would they attempt to fight, and then only until the opportunity to break off contact presented itself.
The Type 2, introduced sometime after 2309, did increase the hull plating and improve the efficiency of the shield system.
A total of 61 Type 1 and 43 Type 2 CS-9-class ships are known to have been built. 48 Type 1s were eventually converted to Type 2 models. 3 Type 1s and 2 Type 2s have been destroyed. 4 Type 1s and 5 Type 2s have been scrapped. 5 Type 1s and 11 Type 2s have been sold to a wide range of civilian concerns. 71 Type 2s are currently in reserve fleets, although a number of these are believed to have been damaged with the destruction of the Romulan sun. 1 Type 1 is listed as missing and believed to have been captured by dissident forces. Vulcan Intelligence has tracked the ship on several occasions but has been unable to identify who commands the vessel.
