The Hutes was one of the largest and most powerful starships ever produced by the Cardassian Union, and remains to this date one of the greatest controversies within the political structure of the Cardassian Empire. Built to directly counter ships from the Federtaion, the Hutes was massive and extremely expensive to build. While many of the Hutes systems were tried and true, they had never been brought together in such a large platform before.

The original designed called for four sets of warp coils powered by an enlarged main intermix chamber. This first design produced such a slow response time for the warp matrix that a second intermix chamber was installed. After several near disasters due to subspace resonance within the two chambers, the decision was finally made to return to the traditional two sets of warp coils.

The trouble for the massive ship didn’t end there. In 2296, serious flaws in the large impulse drive were found to be due to sheering stresses. The main impulse drive was eventually scrapped and two powerful drives were installed instead. This immediately increased the crew size and fuel requirements of the massive warship. Despite being well over budget and several years late, designers persisted in overcoming further difficulties with fire-control subsystems, transporter problems and a host of other issues. Continuingly deteriorating relations with the Lissipeans, the recent conflict with the Klingons and uncertainty about the Federation presence pushed for the completion of the Hutes despite the challenges.

In February of 2299, the Hutes was finally commissioned and immediately sent to deter Klingon and Nausican pirates near the Cardassian boarder. With its impressive 15 disruptor banks and heavy weapons, the Hutes was indeed a deterrent. Once on scene, few pirates wished to tangle with the massive vessel and Cardassian trade and exploitation of outlying systems once again began in earnest.

But the Hutes was by no means infallible. In 2301, an engagement with newly arrived Klingon vessels in the region saw the eventually destruction of the CUW Kimulh. While the battle proved costly for both sides (with the Klingons losing three frontline cruisers), the loss of the Kimulh and her escort cruisers was a startling blow. Six months later, the Azeqa was badly damaged in another engagement with a Klingon squadron. The Azeqa was scrapped and several of her systems used on other vessels.

The most startling engagement of the Hutes class came in 2311 when the Kissuq stumbled upon and Orion-Nausican trade base near Umoth VII. Hidden on one of the gas giant’s moons, the base was a transfer point for raiders intercepting trade goods and luxury items being shipped between Kelabri and Ronara. While the Umoth system had been checked time and again, the base was so well hidden it was only a fluke that the Kissuq detected it. Realizing that the base was compromised, the Nausicans and Orions both attempted to run with as much “loot” as they could. The Kissuq engaged nearly a dozen pirate vessels during the engagement but failed to note that the base’s main reactor had been set to overload. With the resulting explosion only damaged one of the Kissuq’s deflector generators, it was enough for the braver (if not more blood thirsty) Orion captains to swarm. The Orions were eventually able to load and launch their large freighters and run before additional Cardassian patrol ships arrived. The Kissuq did managed to destroy several pirate vessels but was unable to capture the freighters and eventually suffered catastrophic failure of one of its impulse engines. The resulting explosion forced the scrapping of the Kissuq.

Despite these losses, the Hutes remained in service well into the 2330. Of the original 30 planned, 17 were completed and launched before the program was halted. One was destroyed and two were scrapped, all after combat. The remaining 14 are now listed as reactivated to supplement the massive Cardassian losses during the Dominion War. Designers are currently looking for ways to update the older vessels despite extremely limited resources.
