NOTES:
Of all the military designated craft fielded by Star Fleet during the Great Awakening, none was as combat-oriented as the Cochise class. Fielded as relations between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets deteriorated on a weekly basis, the Cochise was seen as the perfect front-line combat support vessel.
To achieve it’s primary mission role, the Cochise Mk I was fitted with the heaviest Accelerator Cannon in the Star Fleet inventory – the FAC-3. This massive combat weapon gave the Cochise the ability to directly engage Klingon cruisers with a moderate chance at success. With the medium range FL-5 and powerful FSG shield, the Cochise would go on to prove invaluable during the war, often being called on to protect vulnerable flank positions or providing cover fire during withdraws. To achieve this success, though, designers were forced to make significant concessions, some of which proved unpopular.
To house the FAC-3 and it’s subsystems, Decks 2 and 3 were conscripted. This forced the reduction of the entire science lab facility as well as it’s relocation. Officers quarters were also reduced in size due to the change. Deuterium and Anti-Deuterium stores were reduced by 10% to provide space for the additional coolant system for the FL-5, which also forced the reduction of on-board recreation facilities. Life aboard the Mk I was often considered Spartan, yet the combat prowess of the Cochise could not be denied.
The Mk II was not official adopted into the inventory until several years after the Four-Years War. Plans to scrap the Cochise class, along with a wide number of other older or mission-specific vessels was eventually curtailed when Chokis proposed a way to improve and modernize the Cochise without the need for major reworking. The improved design allowed planners to expand the small science base as well as enlarge crew and officer quarters. As with many upgrades during this time, the Cochise Mk II saw the installation of phasers, photon torpedoes and improved primary shield systems. The main computer was also enlarged and an improved power plant was also installed.
The Mk III was again fielded with the intentions that the Cochise would see combat against the Klingons as relations again deteriorated. The Mk III saw the inclusion of heavier phasers and the reliable FP-1 Photo Torpedo system. The Mk III would go on to serve until 2275, when the last Cochise was refit to the Cochise II.
A total of 25 Mk I’s and 1 Mk II were new build’s. All 25 Mk I’s were eventually converted to Mk II’s and all Mk II’s were converted to Mk III’s. 24 were converted to Coshise II’s, one was refit to the Ajax class while one was refit to the Samson class.
