Of the 386 G-5As built, 281 were converted to G-5Bs and 54 were converted to G-5Cs; 21 have been destroyed, 2 have been captured by private interests in the Triangle, 13 are listed as missing, 3 have been scrapped, and 12 have been traded to the Romulans.

A total of 261 G-5Bs were built, bringing the total commissioned to 542. 33 have been destroyed, 5 have been captured (1 by Star Fleet, 3 by Romulans and 1 by Cardassians), 7 are listed as missing, 6 have been scrapped and 25 have been traded to Naussicann interests. 466 were converted to G-5Ds.

The G-5C was the last production model, ending production of the G-5 in 2318. A total of 110 new hulls were built, bring the number commissioned to 164, 9 have been destroyed, 4 have been scrapped, 3 have been captured (1 by the Romulans, 1 by Tzenkethi and 1 by Cardassians), 5 were sold to various Orion interests. Only 1 is listed as missing. 142 were converted to G-5Ds.

The G-5D, the final model to be fielded, saw 608 total vessels commissioned. While no G-5 had no original parts or equipment, the 100+ year old design was chosen to be used extensively during the Dominion War. Many a ship commander found themselves dropping their cargo pods and engaging Jem’Hadar combat craft, often to the death. Despite being a favorite target, the G-5 proved invaluable to the war effort. A total of 291 were destroyed, 55 were scrapped and 11 are listed as missing. 17 were captured, including 13 by Jem Hadar, 3 by Breen and 1 by Cardassians. Following the war, the decision was made to sell the remaining ships, many to the Cardassians to aid in rebuilding their homeworld. A total of 212 were sold, with a further 17 traded.

The G-5 was manufactured at the facilities of Gnuu Re’ and Taamar. Annual production rate peaked at 30. The name, an obvious reference to its function, is a translation of the Klingon qexa.
