Wellington Class XI Light Cruiser

Wellington Class XI Light Cruiser

From Star Trek: The Next Generation – Officer’s Manual (1st Edition), FASA, Redraw by Calvinboygenius

NOTES:
Designed primarily for frontier defense command, the Wellington class light cruiser is ideally suited as a “trip-wire” vessel. In addition to its heavy phaser and photon torpedo batteries, the Wellington class mounts the “Long Lance” plasma torpedo, which is designed to disrupt enemy sensors and control systems at extreme range. This makes the Wellington a formidable opponent against all but the largest enemy vessels. Wellintons typically operate in special task groups of three vessels, and are assigned to the command of a local star base commander. The Wellington class was produced at the rate of three vessels per year at the Vannis, Troyis, and Argellius Shipyards.

Ship Size Issue:

Looking at the original and re-imagined stats for the Wellington as well as the graphic and so on – the Wellington class size (as published) seem WOEFULLY under scaled. The simple fact is, at the stated 175m long and 37 m tall, the Wellington’s primary hull would be approximately waist high. To correctly scale the ship requires one of two approaches. The first is to take the graphic and match up reference points. (Windows, lifeboats – etc.) Since we’re using the amazing re-draw by Calvinboygenius, that’s pretty easy to do. Once figured out – the Wellingotn’s stated size must be tripled. (I.e. 525 m, 186 m, 111 m). This is WELL within the range of the TNG size ships and a decent size for a Class XI cruiser. Unfortunately, the original graphic didn’t have these references…in fact a few portholes is all that you can really use. So you’re left with scaling the primary hull up until it is a size that work. To make a long story short – taking into account the size of a standard deck from TMP/TNG, flooring and ceiling deck plating, yaha yaha….you end up with the following size: 336.6 m x 128 m x 71 m. Slightly bigger than your classic Enterprise class. In the end, this is the dimensions we decided to go with.

Vessel Stats:

The statistics presented here represent the conjectural improvement of vessels from the Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer Manual. As published, the original stats for this vessel do not reflect a major improvement over previous material. These stats do not represent an improved version but are meant to replace the original stats. For more information on the improvements over the original – please see the article: TNG Officers Manual – A Successful Failure.
