Major Data Source: Orion & Triangle Sector Intelligence
The Interbus class is designed for large-scale transportation needs of several of the larger Orion freight companies. The internal cargo hold of the Interbus allows a varied range of cargoes, from livestock to vacuum cargoes, with the hold even able to be converted into living space and berths for passengers. This has made the Interbus popular with the larger shipping companies who are able to convert the cargo hold quickly to fit their needs.
The A-1 model was specifically designed to be usable within the Federation, where the heavier weapons favored by Orion trading firms are significantly restricted. The A-1’s short range but powerful disruptors allow this ship to defend itself from smaller pirate ships. This variant has become very popular with a number of races well beyond the Orion colonies.
The A-2 model was designed to operate in more hostile territory. With extra disruptor mounts and a powerful shield system, the A-2 is designed to hold out against attacking vessels long enough to allow reinforcements to arrive.
The A-3 model replaced the main weapons with farther reaching OD-5’s. More expensive to maintain, the extra range became popular with freight captains operating in unclaimed space, where conflicts were rare but often dangerous.
The A-4 model increased the primary weapon systems to counter the increased capabilities of other Orion pirates and raiders from a wide range of unaligned groups. The shields and hull plating were also increased.
All four models are still available for production. Sales remained steady until 2320, despite the costs of initial purchase and upkeep. Of the 80 or so Interbus’ built over the years, most remain in active service. Two A-1’s have been captured by unknown elements in the triangle. One A-3 has been destroyed by the Klingons. Currently, records indicate that 10 or more Interbus’ have disappeared (including 6 A-1’s, 3 A-2s, and 1 A-3). Unofficially, nearly all of these vessels were taken by their crews and operate as independent merchants in the Neutral Zone.
