ON THE PRECIPICE: “Bridge to Captain,” The comm squawked in the training deck. For two hours the reports had trickled in of the Klingon launching an attack. Captain Zahra wondered if it was his turn to join the fray. “Go ahead” he acknowledged. “Automatic defenses just activated, sir. Unknown vessel at extreme range.” The first officer was good at his job. He had read the same reports. He knew what was coming. “Battle stations” ordered the captain. “Where are they at Jones?” the captain asked as the klaxon sounded. The chief tactical office came on the line. “They’re headed towards that cluster of asteroids at the edge of Precipice.” “They may be trying to establish a small beachhead. Perhaps a supply depot or repair point?” asked the navigator. “The way those asteroids are clustered together, it’ll be a hell of a time trying to get them out of there,” commented the science officer. Captain Zahra knew the Klingon would quickly set up disruptor emplacements and other defenses and turn eight larger asteroids into a multi-point fortress. It would take several assaults or a major engagement to dislodge them. Zahra knew he couldn’t let that happen. “Increase to maximum speed and prepare for combat,” he ordered. He headed from the training facility – the only quiet spot on the ship and headed towards the bridge as crew ran too and frow preparing for battle. |
