NOTES:
In 2303 Starfleet felt the need to boost its defensive capability following several minor border incidents with dissident the Klingon IKS. The successful Daring Class was chosen as the basis for a modified ship which was would become the Demon Class of heavy destroyer. Unlike the deep-penetration role of the Daring Class, the Demon Class was designed with powerful defenses as it’s primary focus. The class was intended to supplement the Akyazi Class perimeter action vessels, responding quickly to incursions into Federation space. Demon Class vessels were also intended to cat as a close escort and fire support platform for the Thunder Class of battle frigate.
The most notable difference between the Daring and Demon class was the adoption of the simpler nacelle design that housed the FWL-2 warp nacelles. This decision allowed for more efficient repairs following battle and gave the Demon class the ability to swap out nacelles quickly at repair facilities when needed.
Designers had intended to use a dual-M-6A configuration to allow for increased firepower and computing capability. However, cost overruns quickly developed as programmers tried in earnest to allow both cores to easily communicate. While M-6A components were more readily available, the M-8 was eventually installed.
Andorian influence was evident in the final production model of the Demon Class. The nacelles were fitted closely together to allow for increased initial warp speeds and gave the class a less standard warp signature. The Andorian designers also installed the powerful FMH-11 megaphaser system, vastly increasing the Demon’s first-strike capability. The phasers, torpedoes and shield systems were all similar to other Miranda-based designs, allowing for quick installation and ease of repair when necessary. Space originally designated for the second M-6A computer was easily re-purposed to allow for four additional laboratories.
The Demon Class distinguished itself during conflicts with the Tholians, Cardassians and Romulans. In early 2342, the decision was made to upgrade several of these vessels. The Mk II would see the installation of the I-8 isolinear computer system as well as increase to shields, weapons and the primary impulse drive. These ship would go on to serve during the Dominion war, with many defending Andoria from constant Jem-Hadar attacks during that conflict.
Following the war, remaining vessels were evaluated for further Service Life Extension. However, nearly all functioning vessels were found to need complete replacements of their FWL-2 warp nacelles. The decision was made to mothball the remaining vessels as they completed their final missions. The last Demon class was removed from service in 2389.
