Of the 368 S-5s built, 137 Cs remain in active service with 99 Cs in reserve fleets; 2 Cs are used as training vessels, 18 As, 7 Bs and 31 Cs have been destroyed, 4 have been captured (2 by Star Fleet, 2 by the Romulans and 2 by the Jem’Hadar), 10 As, 3 Bs and 4 Cs are listed as missing, 16 As, 6 Bs and 27 Cs have been scrapped, and 1 A has been sold to private interests in the Triangle. The S-5 was produced at the Gnuu Re’ facility at a rate of 12 per year.
The name is a reference to the duties of the vessel; the Klingon class name is qogh che’wI’, which translates to “ear healer”.
