Of the 1,802 K-3s built, 222 K-3As and 50 K-3Ds are in reserve fleets. 79 K-3As, 236 K-3Bs, 81 K-3Cs, 38 K-3Ds and 29 K-3Es have been destroyed. 40 have been captured (14 by the Romulans, 9 by Star Fleet, 4 by private interests in the Triangle, 4 by Orions and 9 by the Cardassians), 25 K-3As, 2 K-3Bs, 5 K-3Cs, 2 K-3Ds and 3 K-3Es are listed as missing. 123 K-3As were traded to the Romulans. 6 K-3Bs have been traded and 38 sold to private interests in the Triangle, 14 K-3Bs have been sold to Orions, and 9 K-3As, 2 K-3Bs, 1 K-3C and 9 K-3Es have been sold to prominent families within the Empire. 345 K-3Ds and 325 K-3Es have been sold to the Ferengi who have since resold them to a number of sources.to The K-3, formerly produced at Taamar, Gnuu Re’, and Z’hai, is no longer in production.
The class is named for a small, nocturnal predator native to Veridor.
