The D-116 was another attempt to produce an inexpensive yet capable design following the end of the Four-Years War. The D-116 combined hull elements from the D-4 and D-16 classes in the hopes of combining the advantages of these two vessels. However, the final variant proved to be somewhat ineffective as either a destroyer or cruiser.
Modestly powered and weakly armed, the D-116 did see improvements over it’s parent classes, most notably the D-16. A much improved impulse drive gave the D-116 an excellent power curve for a vessel of it’s size. The decision to continue using the KWC warp drive also gave the D-116 a capable speed advantage over other light cruisers of the era. The design saw the addition of fore and aft torpedoes, a much needed boost in firepower.
Despite an enlarged secondary hull, these improvements still made the D-116 a cramped vessel to serve on. The addition of equipment associated with larger cruisers further reduced interior space, yet required a larger crew to operate. The vessels proved somewhat popular with Fusion houses who’s members believed the ship would carry them to the “Black Fleet” far sooner than other ships in the Fleet.
Only 32 of these ships were were built with production ended even before the destruction of Praxis. 7 are listed as missing, although most are believed to have defected to the IKS. 2 were scrapped. 13 were sold to various entities. 10 are still in the service of ranking families. These ships were built at the Gnuu Re’ facility at a rate of 4 per year.
