NOTES:
Known Sphere Of Operation:  Empire-wide use
Data Reliability:  D for Type 1 and Type 2l, C for Type 3
Major Data Source:  Romulan Sector Intelligence

The V-91 is considered one of the best hunter-killer class light cruisers to ever come from the Romulan Empire. The class is reasonably impressive in it’s standard operating configuration, slightly more powerful the the V-7. However, the V-91 has never been encountered acting alone, a factor that give the cruiser a distinct advantage in battle.

The V-91 incorporated a large plasma weapon that created a massive first strike when used with established Romulan tactics. With several standard photon torpedoes also available, these ships could easily devastate almost any enemy ship they encountered. The ship capability as a standard cruiser was somewhat less effective, with much of the internal volume dedicated to the plasma weapon and long range sensors. None the less, these ships were large and roomy, making them popular with crews and officers alike.

Only nine V-91s were known to have been built, with all of them being assigned to squadrons of three. Star Fleet Intelligence tracked all three squadrons during the 2280’s, becoming keenly aware of the ships capabilities. These squadrons proved effective against the Klingons where they were rarely driven off. However, after 2300, these ships became harder to track, and their operations were more clandestine. An upgraded model was detected in the later 2360s, although it is believed that version had been launched several years before. It was not until the Romulans entry into the Dominion War that the Type 3 was confirmed, and then only at long range.

Unfortunately, all nine of these vessels were assigned to the Romulus/Remus system when the star prematurely went nova. 8 were destroyed outright and one was able to warp from the system, but was severely damaged by the subsequent sub-space shockwave. It was later scuttled for unknown reasons.

The V-91 was produced at the Remus shipyards. It is named for a demonic spirit from Romulan mythology that is said to stalk travelers who venture into the wilds.
