As large as the L-24 class battleships, these vessels were commissioned into service prior to the introduction of the L-30 Ber’taa battleships. When first launched, these ships use almost all state of the art components in their design. Nearly all of the new components work well together to create a fearsome fighting platform. It is the intention of the Klingon High Command to operate these ships in pairs with a Ber’taa class battleship, forming the command squadron of all it’s front line fleets. Even as the first D-38s were being commissioned, plans to reclassify the L-24 battleship as a heavy battlecruisers were already in the works. The L-24 would form new heavy strike squadrons along the Romulan boarder, while the L-30 and it’s high-firepower D-38 escorts would take over the L-24’s duties.

Unfortunately for backers of the D-38, the destruction of Praxis ended the production of the D-38, which was simply too expensive to for it’s limited mission parameters. Construction of the D-38 was at the rate of 4 per year using the facilities at Taamar and Gunn Re’ until 2293. While six new hulls were in various stages of construction, only five more would be commissioned.

All 17 D-38s served well until the last was finally retired in 2339. Several of these ships were reactivated during the Dominion War, but were used to monitor activity in the Triangle and did not see combat. Of the 17 built, 1 was destroyed and 1 was sold to the Naussiccans. The remaining 15 are still in reserve fleets.
