NOTES:
Upon her triumphant return, the USS Aldeberan was immediately prepared for redesign. At the time of her initial retirement, the Aldeberan was expected to be re-designated as a scout class. Several destroyer designs were also in the works, but in the end Star Fleet Procurement decided on a non-standardized research cruiser.

Like other mission-specific vessels, the Aldebaran had the bulk of its sub-systems geared towards focusing the ships capabilities on a single research target. The most notable aspect of this mission parameter was the external sensor “ring” found amidships. four small and two large equipment bays were also located amidships, giving direct access to the sensor ring for research teams and specialty gear. The Aldebaran’s crew and passenger quarters were also designed for extended use. Like other deep space and long term mission vessels, each crew member had their own quarters and recreation facilities were extensive. Visiting research teams had their own recreation and support facilities, making the Aldebaran a popular choice among the scientific community.

The Mk I was equipped with specially modified FWL warp nacelles. These nacelles did require special attunment to ensure the sensor’s could function accurately at high warp. On-board automated systems made adjustment easy, though, and no additional engineering crew were felt necessary. Unique wing-mounted impulse drives also enhanced the sensor systems accuracy.

The Mk II saw increases in computing power, shielding and overall main drive power, with several additional shuttles added to the ships inventory. However – neither the Mk I or II were produced in large number, with only a total of 12 hulls ever being completed. All twelve survived well past their initial 20 year mark and remained active will into the 2350’s. Despite calls for a Mk III, the Aldebaran II has not been upgraded, with most being relegated to lower echelon missions in recent years. Plans are in the works to either refit or retire the class as a whole. All twelve vessels were built at the Salazaar shipyards.
