A twin TLH-1 laser turret was fitted under the bow of the vessel. This is capable of firing into the forward 180° arc. This unfortunately means that in use, the turret has jammed approximately 10% of the time in the extensions of the forward arc, resulting in rather crazy piloting to allow weapons fire, or mad rushes to escape raiders.
Almost a typical armed Tavares, with just a couple of laser banks added. There are probably many more Tavares’ armed in this fashion, as lasers are legal for use in Federation space. The turret on this particular vessel is more unusual, however.
It seems odd that Gerav chose lasers for armament, as there are quite a few Tavares freighters in Tellarite hands with twin or quad Orion disruptors. A twin bank forward would have a Combat Efficiency of 1.4, and a ship fitted with a twin bank forward and aft would be double that! Gerav has been heard to say he prefers the legality of the laser bank, plus his preference for the double fire feature. Tellarite engineering prowess/stubbornness seems to equally explain the modified turret feature. He has told many a tall tale of it jamming, and still chasing off his attacker with almost suicidal flying to allow the jammed weapon to fire.
(Game note: for every shot taken at a target outside the normal forward firing arc, roll 1D10. On a roll of ‘1’, the turret jams in the relevant outside (port or starboard) portion of the extended arc, and is stuck till the vessel returns to a repair facility. It is still able to fire however!)
