The Starstorm class destroyer-escort is considered by many to be one of the most impressive Klingon warships fielded during the 2270s and 80s. Entering service with the Klingon Navy in early 2275, the D-51 quickly established a fearsome reputation as being capable of taking on significant numbers of smaller craft and delivering effective counterstrikes. Eight disruptor emplacements and seven torpedo launchers gave the D-51 an effective strike capability in all directions. A reinforced hull complemented the high rate of fire associated with the Starstorm giving the D-51 its fearsome reputation.

The A model was equipped with the mid-range KD-5 disruptor and the effective KP-2 torpedo system. The D-51’s large hull allowed the ships to carry additional torpedoes beyond the standard load of other similarly sized ships. The D-51 also embarks 70 Marine troops who are housed in four barracks onboard rather than in hypothermia capsules. This allows troops to be deployed almost instantly when needed. Ten light craft, including assault shuttle and several fighters are also standard abord the Starstorm. The A model was initially deployed along the Romulan border but was soon detailed to the Triangle to support operations against Orion raiders and the IKS.

The D-51B was first introduced in 2285 and saw several improvements over the A model. Improved distruptors and shielding increased the overall combat effectiveness. However, it was the inclusion of the massive and powerful KIE impulse drive that gave the D-51B increased sub-light maneuverability during combat. The B model became the preferred model with a number of A models converted. The D-51B was soon deployed along the Federation Neutral Zone. While it’s effectiveness was undeniable, the D-51, like many Klingon ships, ended initial production shortly after the destruction of Praxis.

Surprisingly, the D-51 was reintroduced into main line production in late 2304. Although a C model was planned, only the prototype was built and it proved less effective than anticipated. The D model however, did prove effective and was chosen for production. The D model replaced the KP-2 torpedo systems with the far longer ranged KP-9 system. This gave the D-51 the ability to effectively strike the notoriously nimble Orion pirate vessel that continued to plaque the empire.

The final variant was introduced in 2369, although had been in the works for several years. The E model saw the replacement of the primary distruptors and torpedoes to more efficient and sturdy systems, giving the D-51 and additional service period. Most notable was the installation of the very powerful KNSB shield system. This powerful system was more efficient than previous shields and allowed the D-51 to close with it’s targets to deliver a successful first strike. Nearly all D-51 were converted to E models before finally being removed from service in 2390.

Of the 154 D-51s built, 14 Bs and 10 Es are in reserve fleets. 6 As, 7 Bs, 4 Ds and 43 Es have been destroyed. 1 A and 1 D have been captured by the Romulans, 1 E was captured by the Cardassians and 2 Es were captured by Dominion forces. 2 As, 1 B and 4 Es are listed as missing. 3 As, 2 Bs, 1 D and 28 Es have been scrapped. 20 Es were sold following the Dominion War. 3 As and 1 B are in service to ranking families within the Empire, however – none are believed to be in the original operating configuration.

The ship is named for the Klingon “puQmov’jev“.
