NOTES:
Known Sphere Of Operation:  Empire-wide use
Data Reliability:  A
Major Data Source:  Klingon Sector Intelligence

One of several attempts to upgrade and improve the D-20 cruiser, the D-120 was larger and more spacious internally than other cruisers of the era. The removal of hypothermia capsules further increased the internal volume of the D-120, allowing for the inclusion of larger laboratory and research facilities. An improved long range sensor suite was also installed, making the D-120 popular along the Romulan border. Approved for construction in 2289, the D-120 was similar in combat capability to the vaunted D-7, but was less expensive to build and maintain. By 2290, production was in full swing at 20 per year.

Unfortunately for proponents of the D-120, the destruction of Praxis had the same effect on the construction program as every other ship in the fleet. While production never completely halted, it was quickly reduced to just 6 hulls that year and only 4 the following year. The ships relative in expense to build and maintain ensured that production resumed following the signing of the Kitohmen Accords. Production continued through 2303 when the final hull was commissioned.

The D-120 remained in front-line operational use until 2328 when the decision was made to upgrade existing ships. Proponents spent several years attempting to insure that any upgrades would be less expensive than current upgrades to other ships. The B model, launched in 2330, had few improvements over the A model and proved to be more costly than originally anticipated.

In mid-2341, a second, more successful, attempt was made to improve the D-120. Approved later that year, the C model would go on to be extremely cost effective and successful. By 2348, all D-120 had been upgraded to the C model and were once again operating on the front lines of the Empire.

Of the 161 D-120 built, 17 Cs are in active service. 63 Cs are currently in reserve fleets. 2 A and 19 Cs have been destroyed. 2 Cs were captured during the Dominion War. 1 A and 3 Cs are listed as missing. 1 A and 28 Cs have been scrapped. 5 As and 20 Cs are currently in service to ranking families within the Empipre.
