While the primary concern of the Klingon Empire remained an impending conflict with the Federation in the latter-half of the 23rd Century, the Klingons continued their conflicts with the Cardassians and were still assessing their gains from the conflicts with the Breen and Talarians. However, the opportunistic Romulans and continuing conflict with the Kinshaya remained a major concern for the Empire and fleet planners were determined to be prepared for further escalation with these opponents.
A significant part of this defensive strategy included the L-66 heavy frigate. The L-66 was a large and capable frigate that was designed to meet any Romulan or Kinshaya vessel in head-to-head combat and deliver a powerful blow to deter enemy aggression.
The L-66 was one of the rare Klingon designs built to utilize a plasma weapon as it main missile system. The L-66 was also heavily armed with the powerful KD-8 disruptor and twin aft firing KP-5 torpedoes. The hull was also more heavily armored than other ships of the period, giving the L-66 increased survivability in combat. The efficient KSL shield system further enhanced it’s combat ability and helped protect the L-66’s medium Marine battalion of 180 troops. It larger cargo capacity extended the range and operational capability of these troops when in action.
Firepower, durability and mission endurance did come at a cost, however. The L-66 was less maneuverable, proving ponderous when engaged at long range. None the less, the KCD cloaking device allowed commanders to close with their intended targets and launch a powerful strike.
The L-66A was produced in limited numbers with the intention of expanding construction output until the destruction of Praxis, when the program was cancelled. Only 25 hulls were completed when the Empire was forced to cut much of it’s military spending. Most were in stand-down with the intension of being sold or mothballed when the L-66B was first fielded. The B model proved less expensive to upgrade than many other vessels and was soon approved for the remaining L-66s in the fleet. The L-66 would go on to service until sometime after 2344 when the final ships was decommissioned.
Of the 25 L-66s built, 1 A and 2 Bs have been destroyed. 1 B is listed as missing. 2 As and 1 B have been scrapped. 2 As and 6 Bs are in service to ranking families in the Empire. 10 Bs are in reserve fleets. 20 As were converted to Bs.
The class is named from the Klingon pujbe’ mIw or Glorious Path.
