The T-27 is a capable medium destroyer that appears to have been fielded to directly engage Klingon raiders in the Triangle. The vessels have also been deployed in squadrons of three along the Klingon border in an attempt to offset the Klingon numerical advantage.
The Type 1 is heavily armed with eight disruptor, making the T-27 a formidable opponent. The inclusion of a Klingon-style forward command boom has allowed for a large cargo hold and more spacious crew quarters. This has also allowed for a large torpedo magazine, reducing resupply needs after combat. Many front line commanders and crew still see these ships as overly influenced by Klingon design philosophy. Despite their comfortable accommodations and effective combat capability, the T-27 is not an overly popular vessel. Despite this fact, the Type-2 was fielded some time in mid-2279.
The Type 2 has an enlarged impulse drive and improved shields and is believed to use the more powerful RP-3 torpedo system. This variant was the last standard production model.
The Type 3 installed a more powerful torpedo system as well as a trinary-efficiency shield, improving the combat ability.
The Type 4 was an attempt to use the quantum-singularity system for the primary power system. Unfortunately, the existing RWD warp coils reacted badly, and the designs was never implemented.
The Type 5 replaced the RWD warp coils along with the main power system. Improved weapons and shields further complemented the T-27 design.
The Type 6, first fielded in 2347, was used extensively along the Gorn border, but was eventually transferred to the Dominion front where they served an a number of roles.
Of the approximately 100 ships built, 49 remain in active service, although sales contracts have been secured for nearly all active vessels. 3 Type 1s, 1 Type 2, 1 Type 3 and 11 Type 6s have been destroyed. 1 Type 1, 3 Type 3s, 1 Type 5 and 9 Type 6s have been scrapped. 1 Type 6 is listed as missing but may have been captured rogue Dominion forces after the war. 10 Type 6s are currently in reserve fleets.
