Popular and capable, the Bralek<\/em> class of light cruiser was anything but a light cruiser, and proved the most popular vessel in the Cardassian inventory until the launch of the Galor<\/em> class. The Bralek was so capable and successful that it saw action in every major conflict between the Cardassian Union and all of its immediate neighbors. Even during the Dominion War, Braleks<\/em> that had been in reserve status for 30 years or more were called back into action.<\/p>\n

The Bralek<\/em> proved popular because of its reinforced hull. Capable of taking several direct hits, the hull was also easily repaired in the field, allowing the class to continue operating where other ships required major refits. The Bralek<\/em> was fitted with the powerful CWD-4 warp drive and twin CIE-2 impulse units. Although the CIE-2 did have problems with its cooling system, the unit was far more powerful than other impulse drive in use at the time.<\/p>\n

An impressive 10 disruptors and a heavy forward spiral wave disruptor cannon gave the Bralek significant punch against other vessels in its class. These weapons would be used in earnest when the Cardassians took on the encroaching Klingons some years later.<\/p>\n

But the Bralek<\/em> was not without its drawbacks. Despite the Unions best engineers working on the problem, the power transfer to the Bralek’s<\/em> maneuvering systems remained poor. The large wing-style warp drive required special magnetic channeling systems to ensure accurate distribution of plasma to the warp coils. This taxed the computers and required additional crew to monitor. The Bralek<\/em> was also far slower than its contemporaries.<\/p>\n

The Bralek<\/em> remain in active service with 47 Type-4s and 105 Type-5s currently operating along the edge of Cardassian space. 10 Type-5s are used as training vessels. 12 Type 1s, 1 Type-2, 9 Type-3s, 18 Type-4s and 22 Type-5s have been destroyed. 2 Type-1s, 1 Type-3, 3 Type-4s and 3 Type-5s have been captured. 1 Type-3, 4 Type-4s and 1 Type-4 are listed as missing. 8 Type-1s, 5 Type-3s, 12 Type-4s and 11 Type-5s have been scrapped. 30 Type-1s have been sold to civilian concerns. With some hulls retaining structural supports that are nearly 100 years old now, the Bralek<\/em> is expected to retire soon.
