One of the earliest vessels to be “sold” to the AOFW, the MacEa<\/em> was dispatched under a program similar to “lend-lease” from Terra’s second world war. This allowed the fledgling AOFW to obtain numerous vessels during the Four-Years War without declaring allegiance to the Federation. Unfortunately, the attempt at neutrality was shattered after Klingon troops attacked Maze. Fortunately for the AOFW, the MacEa<\/em> and other vessels on loan had been updated and quickly entered the conflict.<\/p>\n

To facilitate the possible immediate entry into the conflict, the MacEa<\/em> was equipped with a number of Edoan and Caitan subsystems, quickly replacing and upgrading the aged primary systems of the Valley Force<\/em> class. The FWD warp drive proved the most effective as a replacement for the larger and more complex FTL-7 drive, which did not have the necessary speed in comparison to more modern vessels. A binary shield system also gave the MacEa<\/em> impressive defensive capability. Many of these upgrades would go on to influence the Federations own improvement to Star Fleet following the war.<\/p>\n

The MacEa<\/em> was involved in five separate engagements with Klingon forces during the waning months of the war. Following the conflict, the AOFW was able to negotiate a payment plan for the MacEa<\/em> and other vessels and retained the ship, eventually paying her off by 2268. The following year, the vessel was drydocked for a second round of improvements. <\/p>\n

The Mk II became an extremely powerful defensive cruiser following the installation of the FWG warp drive system. The additional power, coupled with a large impulse drive gave the Mk II equal power to most Federation ships of the period. This allowed the AOFW to become one of the more significant political forces in the region, without the need to extensive funding and support from the Federation. The MacEa<\/em> was often called upon to provide security across the AOFW and throughout the Triangle. <\/p>\n

The MacEa<\/em>, like many vessels of the AOFW, would be refit again and again, with worn systems replaced and improved when possible. However, in 2335, several AOFW members did put forth propositions to retire the MacEa<\/em>. While the class was technically over 100 years old, AOFW naval personnel did argue that almost no component on the vessel was original, with many being less than 20 years old. With increased pirate activity across the Triangle and several deadly encounter with IKS ships near AOFW territory, the decision was made to upgrade the MacEa<\/em> and in 2341, the MK III was fielded.<\/p>\n

The MK III MacEa<\/em> would go on to serve for another 18 years before being severely damaged by IKS forces while protecting several freighters bound for Baker’s World. The ship was eventually decommissioned and scrapped.
