Designed by the Auverdin Design Team of Avondale Shipbuilding Inc., the Kobani class strove to hit specific mission requirements that were unlike other troop-carrying vessels.

The Kobani class was intended to field a larger force of regular armed troops, rather than the more traditional Marine troops associated with frigates or larger assault ships. An arbitrary number of troops, 700, was chosen with the thought that a single Kobani class could potentially field twice the number of ground troops. The Kobani class LPD’s mission called for the vessel to be able to support its ground forces with full field equipment, including housing and secondary support for several weeks if need be.

Designers created a specialized secondary hull for the Kobani class that would house a large cargo section, fabrication support system and the standard engineering subsystems. The original location of the shuttle bay was thought to be too vulnerable, and two smaller interconnected bays were housed in the underside of the primary hull. In place to the shuttle bay, a specialized heavy tractor beam was installed. This massive towing system would allow the Kobani to tow a combat cargo container when necessary without the added physical stress of a hard-plate contact as in more traditional assault transports.

Primary armament became something of a question when the Auverdin team planned to place the main primary hull phasers in the aft quarters. While non-traditional, the design team argued that the vessels primary foe would be lighter or more maneuverable vessels that would attack from the rear quarters. Despite its ability to detach any cargo pod quickly, the Kobani was less maneuverable than other vessels in its class. However, the powerful FWG power plant meant that it had plenty of power for combat operations. Five of the eventual sever Kobani’s built would use this weapon layout. To ensure that the design was able to meet it mission objectives, two mega-phasers were fitted, giving the Kobani a powerful and dangerous first strike ability.

The Mk I was launched in 2274 and immediately assigned to bases along the Klingon Neutral Zone. With it’s powerful warp drive and heavy firepower, the Mk I was often employed as a fast response vessel, answering distress calls and engaging pirate vessels. While few pirates stayed around when the Kobani arrived, after action reports shows that those hardy (or foolish) enough to attempt to engage the Kobani class were soon neutralized. But the first real test of the Kobani class’s ability came during the Taal Tan offensive of 2283.

On Stardate 8030.6, the USS Canberra, in route to Taal Tan, responds to a small squadron of destroyer that were severely outmatched by a Klingon Hunter-Killer squadron. The Federation destroyers immediately turned to rendezvous with the Canberra who’s speed quickly closed the distance between the combatants. Once in range, the Canberra formed up an engaged the Klingons. In just three volleys, the Canberra had decimated the Klingon squadron who immediately retreated.

Several years later, the decision was made to upgrade the Kobani class to the Mk II. While there were only minor internal changes, the main impulse drive was enlarged along with a significant increase in firepower. The Mk II would remain in service for over 50 years, participating in two separate conflicts with the Tzenkethi as well as a major conflict with the Romulans.

While some planners felt that the Kobani class was past it’s prime, having already had a major overhaul, several minor refits and a Service Life Extension Program upgrade, the second major conflict with the Tzenkethi had rattled many in Star Fleet Command. With relation between the Cardassian’s and the Federation frosty at best, and other belligerents in contention for the next major conflict, the decision was finally made in 2337 to refit the Kobani class again.

The Mk III saw the installation of the isolinear I-6 main computer as well as the replacement of the main weapon systems with the newly improved FNH-11’s. The impulse engine was again enlarged giving the Mk III a powerful combat stance. However, the Kobani class was still over 60+ years old and some worried it was no longer viable as a major cruiser. However, all of the active Kobani class vessels saw service during the Cardassian-Federation war. Time and again the Kobani class LPD’s troop compliment was used to shore-up frontline ground defenses while the ships themselves engaged Cardassian cruisers in head-to-head matchups. During the conflict, all of the Kobani class vessels saw combat with only the loss of the USS San Antonio. In 2348, even as the Kobani class was finishing it’s final tours, the decision to refit the vessels to the larger and more modern class had been made. The USS Townsend was pulled from frontline operations after being seriously damaged during the war, and Avondale once again was give the ability to design the new vessel. The new Townsend class would follow similar lines as the Kobani class and would go on to help win a number of conflicts in the coming years.

The USS Kobain herself was the last of the class to be retired in 2351. A total of 7 Mk I were constructed. All seven were refit to Mk II and again to Mk III. One Mk III was destroyed during the Cardassian war. Six Mk IIIs were converted to Townsend class vessels.

<td class="ship"
