\nThe Siva<\/em> class of single engine destroyer was the first real attempt by Star Fleet designers to redesign and incorporate newly discovered requirements from practical reports concerning the Saladin<\/em> class, it\u2019s close cousin. Like the Saladin<\/em> class, the Siva<\/em> class used the FWC power plant to provide excellent speed and good maneuverability as well as sufficient secondary power to make the Siva<\/em> class a more potent combatant than it\u2019s older cousin. However, the internal arrangement of the Siva<\/em> class was significantly different from the Saladin<\/em> class, prompting Star Fleet to issue construction contracts as a new class of ship.<\/p>\n

The Siva<\/em> class destroyer saw the redesign of the science labs to more internal spaces on Deck 5, while officer quarters were moved to decks 2 and 3. To help ensure the greatest possible survivability or the ship, additional cross-over and Jeffrie\u2019s Tubes were installed on deck 6 and 7, allowing crews to reroute power and other vital systems at multiple junctions. Warp field control rooms were also moved closer to main engineering. However, it was the main laser weapon support system that were redesigned to give the ship better fighting prowess. The original battery supply, which supplemented the main laser weapons, was moved inward of the laser system, rather than beside the weapons as in the Saladin<\/em> and Cochise<\/em> classes. While this meant that catastrophic damage to the appropriate deck had the potential to damage or knock out multiple batteries simultaneously, it also meant that the batteries, power transfer systems and other weapon-subsystems were better protected during initial salvos. And unexpected bonus was soon discovered, however. The relocated science labs could now tap into the battery system to supplement various equipment during research operation, reducing the drag on the main power subsystem. This provided a marginal but appreciable increase in full combat readiness during red-alert situations.<\/p>\n

The Mk I was fielded with the FL-1 main beam weapons which supported to powerful and effective FAC-1. This gave the Mk I\u2019s surprising combat potential, which would soon come to bear during the Four-Years War. Like it\u2019s sister ships, all 10 Siva<\/em> class destroyers saw widespread action during the war, with each ship seeing extensive damage by wars end. Like it\u2019s sister ships, crew casualties were high among these vessels, yet the ships could easily be repaired and brought back into the fight making the design resilient and popular with fleet planners. <\/p>\n

The Mk II was quickly fielded as the war dragged on in an attempt to create a more capable combat platform to counter the effectiveness of the numerous Klingon vessels encountered during the conflict. However, upgrades to the existing Mk Is were slower than anticipated. <\/p>\n

After the war, the ease of repair and ease of upgrade made the Siva<\/em> class a candidate for renovation to improved specs. Designers replaced the main beam weapon with the FH-4 and replaced the FAC-2 with the more efficient FP-2. While the FP-2 did not have the overall impact of the FAC-2, it\u2019s ability to function at warp speed made the FP-2 far more desirable. The FP-2 also required less maintenance and space, allowing for additional torpedo casings to be brought on board.<\/p>\n

In 2263, as relations with the Klingons once again deteriorated, the decision was made to include the Siva<\/em> class in the modernization program of the 2260\u2019s. With improvements to batter design and the re-engineering of several internal spaces, the powerful FH-5 was installed, as was the bulkier but more powerful FP-1. A significantly more powerful shield system was also installed, giving the Siva<\/em> class excellent survivability during combat. The main power system was upgraded to the FWC-2 which produced greater secondary power and had excellent maneuverability. Several Sivas<\/em> saw action during the short lived Organian conflict, faring well during combat. <\/p>\n

The Siva<\/em> class would go on to serve well until their eventual retirement in 2272. Of the 10 Siva<\/em> class destroyers fielded, 6 were converted so Siva II<\/em> class destroyers and 2 were converted to Jenghiz<\/em> class destroyers.
