The hulk of the Anubis was eventually towed to Rigel IV with initial intentions for the damaged vessel to be scrapped. However, to honor the incredible varletry of the crew of the Anubis, the decision was made to incorporate many of the operational components of the Anubis into a partially (and as yet unnamed) Surya hull under construction at the Merimar Ship Work fleet yard. The primary bridge, main computer core, sections of the dorsal hull and warp nacelle were all grafted onto the partially finished hull resulting in a new class of ship.

Initially, the Anubis class was intended to be heavily armed and immediately returned to front-line duty. However, with much of the fleet continuing in military engagements along the Klingon border, designers felts that a cruiser design, rather than a single engine frigate or destroyer, would allow Starfleet to reassign other heavy cruisers to the battlefield and continue the much needed exploration and mapping of space. The larger primary hull of the Anubis class would allow for improved layout and support of the vessels’ scientific capabilities. A significantly larger shuttle capability was also incorporated and in 2252, the Anubis was relaunched.

The needs of the many unfortunately forced the Anubis and her sister ships back to the battlefield where they did not fare well in combat. Their reduced armament allowed for quick construction and repair times, but forced the Anubis class to operate as a support craft and in concert with other forward destroyers and frigates. The ease of production meant that the Anubis would continue being produced throughout the war with a peak war-time production of 4 per year. The eventual conclusion of the war ended production of the class in 2258 with only 16 hulls fielded.

However, the simple design and layout meant that the Anubis class was easy to upgrade, and in 2260, the Mk II was introduced. Removing the less efficient laser system and replacing them with the far more efficient phaser system proved to be an extremely simple alteration. An enlarged computer was also installed, giving the ship superior data analysis capabilities. The design also allowed for easy swap out of the primary shield generators, vastly improving the ship’s defensive capability. The Mk II Anubis would help survey and catalogue a wide area of unexplored space, following up on a number of scouting missions.

The design would be updated on final time in 2265. Improved phasers and an enlarged impulse drive significantly enhanced the ship’s capabilities. The Mk III would continue in general service until 2276, when the last Anubis was retired from service.

Of the 16 vessels fielded, 9 Mk IIIs were converted to other vessels. 2 Mk Is, 1 Mk II and 1 Mk III are listed as missing. 1 Mk I and 2 Mk IIs were scrapped. The Anubis was built at the Rigel IV, Catulla and Proxima Centauri ship yards.

<td
