The S-14<\/em> scout was specifically designed to hunt down and destroy what many considered the greatest insult to the Romulan people, the K-22<\/em> Bird of Prey. Like the V-24<\/em>, the S-14’s<\/em> only mission was to seek out and engage their targets, avoiding nearly all other targets of opportunitie. <\/p>\n

Unlike the original S-11<\/em>, which was designed as a scout and not a raiding vessel, the S-14’s<\/em> systems are dedicated to combat. Multiple redundancies and bypasses ensured that the S-14<\/em> could continued the battle even if it was significantly damaged. Although the S-11<\/em> did have sufficient internal space to include some of these systems, it was felt that a new class could better accomplish the requirements. The resulting S-14<\/em> design would go on to be the bane of many a Klingon commander.<\/p>\n

The Type 1 was specifically designed to outgun the latest model of Klingon K-22<\/em>. With heavier firepower and superior shields, the S-14<\/em> was credited with a number of kills by the early 2300’s. The Type 1’s superior torpedo and heavier distruptors allowed it to easily engage Klingon ships in single combat. This type of “hunting” became very popular with Romulan Commanders who wished to strike at the Klingons to avenge national pride.<\/p>\n

The Type 2 would be launched in 2338 in anticipation of the launch of a new K-22F<\/em>. The Type 2 was launched nearly 8 years before it’s intended target, and easily outgunned older K-22s<\/em> in battle. However, the K-22F<\/em> that was eventually fielded was larger and equally as capable as the S-14<\/em>. The two variants would clash often throughout the Triangle and in areas where the Kligons were expanding. By 2355, it was decided to end the primary mission of the S-14<\/em> in favor of traditional scouting operations.<\/p>\n

The S-14 would go on to serve in the Dominion War where it was used exclusively as a combat scout. It was credited with gathering greater amounts of accurate data on Cardassian and Jem’ Hadar activities during the war than any other single class of vessel. The destruction of the Romulan home world finally ended the S-14’s illustrious career. <\/p>\n

Records indicate that a total of 62 S-14s<\/em> were built. Of those, 10 Type 1s and 3 Type 2s are in reserve fleets with the Romulan Free State. 1 Type 1 and 2 Type 2s were destroyed. 1 Type 2 is listed as missing. 2 Type 1s and 3 Type 2s have been scrapped. 40 Type 2 were sold after the destruction of Romulus.
