The K-44 Starfly<\/em> is another dual-hull ship design manufactured for House Alzarek under the direction of its line-chief, Kazoth. Kazoth apparently believed in the principles and advantages of the \u201cdual hull\u201d design.<\/p>\n

The K-44 is a swift, agile, escort that has a nominal crew of 74, plus a 7-man complement of Marines to act as a boarding party. It iwas not a particularly sturdy design, nor was it’s KSB shield generator particularly powerful, but it was considered relatively well-armed for a ship its size with three KD-6 disruptors and, more notably, a KP-3 heavy torpedo. Surprisingly, the class was not equipped with a cloaking device, though one could easily be added.<\/p>\n

Of the 24 K-44s built, 2 have been destroyed and 1 was scrapped. 9 were traded (6 to the Romulans and 3 to the Orions). House Alzarek is believed to have a dozen KP-44s in its house fleet. The class ended production in 2278 but remained in service until some time after 2315. It is unknown if the Alzarek ships have been updated.<\/p>\n

The ship is named for a small fire-fly like creature with a moderately painful sting native to Qr’noS. The insect is only seen on cloudless nights when the stars are visable.
