\nTHE DARK DAYS BEGIN:<\/strong><\/font>
\nUSS Birmingham<\/strong>
\n“That damn frigate is tearing apart the Kinnelly!” shouted the first officer.<\/p>\n

“Z minus 500 meters! Starboard roll – fire as she bears! See if we can damage that D-7 more!” The captain knew that the Klingon would move to protect the damaged cruiser if it was threatened with destruction. He wondered if the Birmingham could actually accomplish that.<\/p>\n

“The Constitution is hailing us!” the communication officer shouted over the din of battle.<\/p>\n

“One of the Klingon destroyers is trying the get under us,” the navigator indicated.<\/p>\n

“Open hailing frequency. How bad is that destroyer damaged?!” the ship shuddered again as more disruptor fire raked her amidship. The captain of the Constitution was quickly put on screen.<\/p>\n

“The Hopi and Vernol are both heavily damaged. We’re not going to win this,” said the Constitution’s captain. “We’ll cover everyone as they pull back.” <\/p>\n

“Commodore, you’re gonna take a lot of damage doing that.” <\/p>\n

“I know, but we’ll last longer than anyone else,” relied the Commodore. The picture shook as the Constitution was hit yet again.<\/p>\n

“Sir, the Klingon destroyer is no longer viable. But Vernol is no longer under her own power!” the science officers voice cracked just a little. The captain was sure if it was the smoke from burned circuits on the bridge or concern for the crew of the Vernol.<\/p>\n

“Shit! This just got more complicated. Move us into a recovery position. Transporter room – you gonna have less that a minute to get everyone you can off the Vernol!” The captain questioned if he was dooming his crew to the same fate as the Vernol. But he wouldn’t leave till he knew.\n<\/td>\n
