Originally launched in early 2290, the D-76 program was immediately cancelled after the destruction of Praxis. None the less, 15 hulls were completed and continued to serve for over 100 years. All 15 A models were eventually converted to the B models by 2325. Attempts to upgrade several systems in 2336 proved ineffective, and a C model was never fielded. Despite the vessels age, a new model was launched in 2366. The D model proved surprisingly efficient, but was expensive to field. By the time of the Dominion war, only 6 had been upgraded, with the remaining vessels scheduled to be sold. The advent of the war changed those plans and the remaining vessels were upgraded to the D model. Two were destroyed during the war and 1 was scrapped due to battle damage. The remining 12 vessels are on active patrol, although most are expected to be retired and sold soon.
The D-76 was produced at the Qo’noS and Taamar shipyards.
