Admirable Class XII Carrier

NOTES:
The Admirable was originally intended as a replacement for the well loved but aging Dakota class carrier. The Dakota had been refit to address its aged components and was arguably one of the best fleet support vessels in the inventory. The Dakota rarely brought its entire complement of light craft into full operation during its service life. By 2331, Star Fleet procurement began accepting designs for a smaller and hardier carrier that could operate in hostile environments as well as support the growing number of long-term large scale research projects that were becoming more prevalent near Federation space. In the end, it was an Andorian design that was chosen in 2334, and the Admirable class was born.

The Admirable class’ basic layout centered on a more comfortable internal working volume This would allow mission planners to keep the vessels in the field longer without undue stress on the crew. While the primary hull was the standard Excelsior style, the internal configuration was significantly changed before tooling was begun. Staterooms were enlarged and a much wider range of recreation systems were also planned. Accommodation of the enlarged crew quarters did force the reduction of lab space both in the primary and secondary hull. Designers also struggled with sufficient fast turn-around landing space despite the vessels size. In 2337, work was halted when the possibility of a through-deck cruiser was proposed. Plans vacillated for over a year before Edoan designers put fourth an efficient tractor beam multi-deck concept that would allow quick recovery and re-deployment of light craft. Shuttles would land on the upper deck where passengers or cargo could be disembarked, then transferred to the lower launch deck, also via tractor beam, rather than being left on the same deck as other arriving craft. While the system did not increase recovery times or redeployment times, it did reduce the need for safety equipment that was costly on the larger open-desk design of through deck carriers.

In 2338, the Andorian designers respond to the deteriorating situation with the Cardassian Union by proposing an increase in the Admirable’s primary weapon systems. Some felt that the Admirable should not be fielded as a warship, while other saw the approaching storm as inevitable and push through the resolution to increase the overall firepower. The Admirable class would field the new FNH-17 with backup targeting sensors. This gave the Mk I firepower that was considered adequate for more military missions that had been envisioned.

Construction of the USS Admirable was completed in 2341 and the ship was immediately deployed to the Cardassian boarder. The Admirable’s first mission was not that of combat, but a massive mapping survey of the Hugora nebula. The Admirable was a huge success, deploying nearly all 100 of its shuttles and fighters to drop sensor buoys throughout the nebula and surrounding space. Within three weeks, the entire nebula was mapped and the Admirable was redeployed to patrol operations in the region.

The Admirable was built at the Aldeberan III, Andor and Daran V shipyards. Of the eight built, one was destroyed during the Dominion war. Plans are currently underway to upgrade the Admirable.
